Why should I compare gas plans in Australia?
The cost of living seems to keep climbing (with no help from Australia’s energy crisis), and your gas bill is likely feeling the heat too. But don’t start prepping for cold showers just yet; there are other ways to keep your budget from going up in flames.
The solution: comparing. By comparing gas plans for a better deal, you might be able to get ahead of the game. Comparing could mean scoring a lower rate, unlocking discounts, or just avoiding a plan that charges you more than it should. If sifting through plans sounds about as fun as reading the terms and conditions on a phone contract, don’t worry – we’ve got the know-how to make it easy.
How much am I paying for gas?
Of the 1,500 Aussies we surveyed in November 2024, 84% were worried about the cost of their upcoming energy bills.1iSelect commissioned i-Link Research to conduct an online survey between 14 and 19 November 2024. The sample is n=1,545 Australians. Date is weighted to represent the population by age, state and gender, and is representative of all Australian adults 18+
But don’t despair – understanding how your gas bill works will help you find a plan that works for your budget. How much you’ll actually have to pay will depend on a few things like your supply charge and your usage charge. Your supply charge is the flat rate you’re charged for getting gas to your home, while the usage charge is based on how much gas you use. These numbers will be your guiding lights when comparing gas plans.

Helpful tip

Bundling your gas and electricity with one provider might sound like an easy win – fewer bills, less admin, done and dusted. But while it can make things convenient, it doesn’t guarantee savings. Sometimes, mixing and matching providers can actually be cheaper than going all-in on a bundle. So before you lock it in, compare your options – you might just find a better deal by keeping them separate!

How much does gas cost in Australia?
If you live in a state where gas prices aren’t regulated, you’re in a competitive retail market, which means gas providers are out there fighting for your business. Once they buy their wholesale gas, they tweak the price to cover tariffs, storage, and transport costs, while still making a profit and being competitive, of course.
So, what does that mean for you? Essentially, you’re the prize that gas retailers want to add to their trophy shelf. How they choose to woo you is up to them (and some strict regulations). One way they like to do this is to offer lower prices than others on the market. But, like limbo, the lower they go, the harder it is to stay in the game.
Now, how does this affect the cost of gas? Well, we can’t really answer that with a simple figure. So, to help give you a guesstimate price, we’ve collected some wholesale gas prices per GJ (gigajoule) from 2024 in different areas of Australia.
Of course, the wholesale price is just one piece of the puzzle. Your final bill can also include things like transporting the gas and environmental obligations, but knowing the base price can help you get an idea of what to expect.
Frequently asked questions
Who is my gas distributor?
Your gas distributor is like the coffee beans to your local café. It’s the barista (provider) who whips everything together to make your delicious coffee, but without the beans, there’d be no coffee in the first place!
Across Australia, different distributors are responsible for keeping your showers warm and your stovetops blazing. Who yours is depends on where you live – here’s a state-by-state breakdown.

How is my gas billed in Australia?
While finding a new gas plan might not be as epic a quest as anything a hobbit has ever embarked on, every great quest starts at home. For you, this means getting comfy in your favourite chair with your latest gas bill in your lap. And don’t worry, you won’t need a calculator close to hand. What you need to do is pinpoint two charges:
- The daily supply charge: This is the cost of supplying gas to your property, even on days when you don’t use gas. It’s a flat fee, so it stays the same no matter how much gas you use.
- The usage charge: This is what you pay based on how much gas you use, listed as cents per megajoule (c/MJ). Depending on your plan, you might see a few different usage charge rates based on how much gas you use.
But be warned, depending on which tariff you’re on, there could be more than just these two charges that you’ll have to keep an eye on. For gas, these tariffs might not look or work the same as electricity tariffs, but they still impact your bill.
What gas rebates or concessions are available?
While you won’t be able to jump on any nationwide rebates (like the Energy Bill Relief Fund) for gas, there are plenty of state-based rebates and concessions to help take the sting out of your bills.
- Electricity and gas rebate (QLD): Eligible pensioners and seniors can get a rebate of up to $89.70 per year for reticulated natural gas.2Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water – Electricity and gas rebates
- Electricity, Gas and Water Rebate (ACT): Eligible concession card holders can get a rebate of up to $800 per year on their gas bills in 2024–25.3Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water – Electricity, Gas and Water Rebate
- Excess gas concession (VIC): If you’re a concession card holder and have winter gas bills that are more than $2,299.14, you could get a concession of 17.5%.4Victoria State Government – Excess gas concession
- Gas rebate (NSW): For eligible concession card holders, you could get $110 each year towards your natural gas or LPG gas costs.5NSW Government – Find an energy rebate
- Winter gas concession (VIC): With an eligible concession card, you could get a 17.5% concession on your gas bills after the first $62.40.6Victoria State Government – Winter gas concession
But this might not be everything each state offers, so it’s worth checking what else is available where you live. Because if there’s one thing better than saving energy, it’s saving money.
