How does car insurance work in Tasmania?
As with the rest of Australia, the only type of car insurance that’s required by law in Tassie is compulsory third-party (CTP) insurance. That said, with so much to explore in the Apple Isle, considering additional levels of car insurance might be wise – especially because ‘Taswegians’ have paid the lowest average car insurance premiums in Australia between 2019 and 2024. On top of that, Tassie is unfortunately gaining a reputation as the ‘roadkill capital’ of the world with animal collisions killing around 32 animals every hour.
What types of car insurance are available in TAS?
Compulsory third-party
Tasmanian drivers must be covered, at a minimum, by compulsory third-party (CTP) insurance. As with every other state and territory, this type of insurance is mandatory in Tassie. Conveniently for Tasmanians, it’s also included in your vehicle registration fees. CTP insurance in Tasmania helps cover medical and compensation costs if someone is killed or injured by your driving but it doesn’t cover any vehicle repair costs.
Third-party property
As the name suggests, third-party property insurance helps cover other people’s vehicles and property if they’re damaged by your vehicle and the accident was your fault. While this is a step up from CTP insurance, it typically doesn’t cover damage to your own car or property – except when caused by an uninsured driver (within a limit) and you’re able to identify the driver.
Third-party property, fire, and theft
Third-party property, fire, and theft insurance still doesn’t cover repair costs for accidental damage if you’re at fault, but it helps cover damage to your car caused by fire or theft. It also covers third-party property damage and damage by an uninsured driver (like a third-party property policy does) – so this is another step up in cover.
Comprehensive car insurance
Okay, we’ve reached the top step of the ladder. Comprehensive car insurance helps protect your own vehicle, as well as damage to other people’s property and vehicles, for a wide range of insured events, whether you’re at fault or not. In some cases, it also covers hail or storm damage to your car. A comprehensive policy often comes with optional added extras, like a hire car or roadside assistance.
What can different types of car insurance cover in Tasmania?

| Compulsory third-party (CTP) | No | No | No | Yes |
| Third-party property | No | No | Yes | No (but covered by CTP) |

Helpful tip

From Burnie to Bicheno, Tassie roads can hold a lot of surprises – not to mention the sometimes-wild weather and the risk of hitting an animal while driving. Only comprehensive car insurance can go the distance and cover your car for damage caused by weather events, animal collisions, or even an unfortunate skid on wet, slippery road. So, whether you live in Devonport or Dodges Ferry, a higher level of car insurance might be well worth the additional cost.

How much does car insurance cost in Tasmania?
No doubt, Tasmania is one of the cheaper states for car insurance premiums – potentially due to its low number of car insurance claims or maybe it’s simply because the Island State produces a lot of well-behaved drivers! That said, age and gender tend to play a heavy role in deciding a policy’s price tag. Here’s an idea of how much iSelect customers in Tas paid for comprehensive car insurance.
Average cost of comprehensive car insurance in Tasmania, 2024–25
| Age | Female | Male |
| 18–24 | $1,330 | $1,161 |
| 25–29 | $635 | $1,005 |
| 30–44 | $945 | $908 |
| 45+ | $753 | $732 |

How can I find the cheapest car insurance in TAS?
First, let’s be clear that the cheapest car insurance policy might not necessarily be the one that’s the best value for you. CTP insurance is way cheaper than comprehensive car insurance, but it doesn’t provide any cover for your own vehicle.
Generally, the cost of your car insurance will depend on a variety of factors, such as your age, the model of car you drive, where you live, and your driving record. Outside of maybe moving house from urban Hobart to regional Huon Valley or buying a new car that’s cheaper to insure, you can’t control most of these. Luckily, there are easier ways to pay less for car insurance:
Install safety features
Some insurers offer lower premiums if you install certain safety features, such as alarms or immobilisers.
Park your car in a safe place
Your insurer will typically look at where your car is usually parked when calculating a premium. If you keep it inside a garage, where it’s safer from the elements (as well as thieves!), your premiums may be less than if you keep it parked on the street.
Choose a higher excess
Your excess is what you pay out of pocket towards the cost of a claim. If you raise your excess, your insurer typically lowers your premium.
Compare policies
Not all policies are equal. By looking at what different policies offer – their level of coverage, additional features and overall cost – you can get a good sense of which is best suited to your needs and budget.

What should I consider when looking for car insurance in Tasmania?
Let’s say you’ve decided that comprehensive car insurance is just the kind of protection you need on Tasmania’s open roads (or in Launceston’s car parks!). It could be worth tweaking your policy or adding some optional extras:
Towing following an accident
If you’re not covered, towing can be an unexpectedly high expense. You might want to check with your insurer whether towing is included or can be added to your policy and any associated limits.
Agreed value
This is the amount you agreed with your insurer for how much your car would be insured for, say when it gets damaged beyond repair. The alternative is market value, where your payment is assessed according to your car’s value on the market at the time of the claim.
Hire car
If you rely on your car for work or personal reasons, you might be able to access a hire car while your car gets repaired after an accident.
Age restrictions for drivers
Some insurers will give you cheaper premiums if you restrict your car only drivers over a given age, such as 25 or 30.
New car replacement
If your car is deemed a total loss (that is, if the repair would cost more than the value of the car) and it’s within a certain age limit, some insurers might offer to replace it with a new car of the same make and model.
Before you get quote, bear in mind that some of these extras can increase the cost of your car insurance. And you might have to pay an additional excess if an age-restricted driver damages your car in an accident. To be safe – grab a cuppa and get familiar with the product disclosure statement (PDS) to avoid any nasty surprises when claiming.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need car insurance in Tasmania if CTP is included in my registration?
If you’re covered by CTP Insurance in Tasmania and have an accident where you’re at fault and another person’s car or property is damaged, you’ll still be responsible for paying for the repairs or replacement of that car. And without either third-party property or comprehensive car insurance, this could be a pretty hefty amount. So, while a higher level of car insurance is not mandatory in Tassie, it could spare you some big expenses down the track.
Is it worth protecting my car against theft in Tasmania?
Though motor vehicle theft decreased in Tassie by 9% in 2024-25, the total number of stolen vehicles was a hefty 1,392 – and that’s above the previous five-year average. Lonnie has the dubious honour of being the area in Tassie where your car is most likely to get nabbed:
| Location | Number of vehicles stolen in 2023 |
| Launceston | 246 |
| Glenorchy | 235 |
| Clarence | 219 |
| Hobart | 207 |
| Brighton | 116 |
| Devonport | 60 |
| Kingborough | 60 |
| Derwent Valley | 56 |
| Northern Midlands | 50 |
| Waratah-Wynyard | 35 |
It’s worth staying vigilant, as car thieves aren’t fazed by heavy foot traffic or location – most vehicles were stolen from residential areas (53%) and in the streets (24%).
All this said, Tassie still does better than most states when it comes to car thefts.
While you might be able to breathe a little easier in Tassie, it’s still worth considering third-party theft or comprehensive insurance when driving around the state. You could also get a dashcam to get that perfect shot of the crook!
What is an ‘excess’ in car insurance?
A car insurance excess is the out-of-pocket amount you agree to pay when filing a claim with your insurance provider.
If your standard excess is $500 and you file a repair claim for $1,500, you’ll need to cover the $500, while your insurer will pay the remaining $1,000.
If your vehicle is a total write-off, your excess will typically be subtracted from the final claim payment you receive.
And remember, if you can afford to opt for a higher excess, many insurers will drop your insurance premiums in return.
What optional extras are available for car owners in Tasmania?
Generally, only comprehensive car insurance offers you the choice of optional extras. Common optional extras include:
- Reduced or zero-excess window glass or windscreen cover
- Accident hire car cover
- Choice of repairer
- Roadside assistance
- New for old car replacement cover
Bear in mind, the optional extras available to you will depend on your policy and may have exclusions and limitations. To avoid any nasty surprises, always read the PDS so you’re aware of when you’ll be covered.
